Creating an Inclusive Environment for the Disability Community 

This is a training programme with a focus on solutions to help staff enhance their support and services offered to disabled people, those with a injury or illness and their support networks.

Topics include:

1. Background information to consider in planning of support and services:

  • Putting the New Zealand Disability Strategy into Action. 
  • The New Zealand Disability Survey and Disability in New Zealand. 
  • Models of disability influencing service provision and service outcomes. 
  • Relevant research, policy and legislation (eg. The Human Rights Act, Code of Health and Disability Consumers’ Rights).

2. Planning services that include people with different medical conditions:

  • Potential barriers to achievement and participation of disabled people. 
  • Practical solutions for planning services and supporting people with different conditions. 
  • Creating the ideal service for disabled people, those with an injury or illness and their support networks.

3. Community agencies and other resources that can assist.

4. Planning for the future.

This training programme has been adapted for a range of settings – tertiary education, social service, state and private sector organisations, local authorities, managers and their staff.
