How do I work? The New Zealand Disability Strategy states that: “disability is the process which happens when one group of people create barriers by designing a world only for their way of living, taking no account of the impairments other people have”. 1 Throughout this website I use the term 'disabled people or person’ to illustrate the fact that 'people are disabled by their environment'. People, for example, may be disabled by attitudes towards their disability or by barriers to physical, information or communication access.
What is my role?
My role is to facilitate a process where individuals, groups and organisations identify practical solutions to overcome barriers that impact on disabled people, and their support networks. I try to ensure that the disability community has the same opportunities as other people in our community.
With all of my work, I:
Am committed to the development of services that empower disabled people and their families to gain skills and have a range of choices. Draw upon my experiences as a disabled person, who has also managed services assisting people with disability, injury or illness. Use a very interactive style - discussions groups, brainstorming ideas, fun exercises, helpful examples and scenarios that ask participants to consider issues. Provide practical solutions, tools and useful resources for resolving barriers to participation and achievement of the disability community.
