How to Create a Safe Environment for Disclosure

How much information should I disclose about my disability to an employer or a training provider?
Do people need to know at all?
Should this information be included in my covering letter, curriculum vitae or application form?
Should I tell people in an interview, or wait until I start?
This is a set of key questions that many people ask themselves about disclosure, especially when they are applying for a job, are in employment or considering training: There are some simple things that your organisation can do to encourage people to disclose.

Many people are afraid to disclose because of how their disability, injury or illness may be viewed by other people. This then makes it hard for the appropriate support to be provided in the workplace.

This workshop explores how an organisation can create a safe environment for people to disclose information about their disability, injury or illness.

Topics covered in this workshop include:

  • Some of the advantages and disadvantages of disclosing information about a disability, injury or illness.
  • A positive disclosure framework to reduce the risk of other people making negative assumptions about a disability, injury or illness.
  • How an organisation can create a safe environment for disclosure.
  • The legal framework for disclosure.
