How to Reduce the Impact of a Disability on Learning and Assessment

This training programme offers solutions to help staff in an education setting enhance their support of disabled people and those with an injury or illness.

The training covers:

• The status of the disability community in education.
• Background information to consider in the planning of support.
• Key barriers to creating an inclusive environment for disabled students.
• Solutions to barriers in a teaching and learning environment.
• Practical solutions for creating an inclusive education environment for the disabled people and those with an injury or illness across a campus.
• Case studies that ask participants to reflect on support of people with different conditions in education.
• The legal framework that staff need to consider (eg. The Human Rights Act, the Code of Health and Disability Consumers' Rights).

• Kia Orite Achieving Equity:  The New Zealand Code of Practice for an Inclusive Tertiary Education Environment for Students with Impairments.

This workshop has been presented to Polytechnic, College of Education and University staff. It is relevant to those involved with teaching, support and other education settings.
