Kia Ôrite - Achieving Equity Implementation and Advisory Service

In 2004 ACHIEVE, with the assistance of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and the Ministry of Education, published ‘Kia Ôrite - Achieving Equity.

This NZ Code of Practice for supporting disabled students in Tertiary Education is a significant resource for working towards equity of access and opportunity for disabled students. A copy is available on http://www.achieve.org.nz/cop/KiaOrite-codeofpractice.pdf

The Tertiary Education Commission, in a recent announcement on equity funding, directed tertiary education providers to Kia Ôrite for guidance on supporting disabled students.

Implementation and Advisory Service
This service has been developed by Ava Gibson and me. We can offer a project management and advisory service to assist tertiary education providers with implementing Kia Ôrite.

We provide the following services:

• Advice and support in developing and carrying-out an implementation process.
• A snap-shot of your current reality measured against the general principles in Kia Ôrite.
• Assistance with developing a plan of action to set and meet equity objectives.
• Supervision and/or coaching of individuals responsible for leading the implementation process, in person or by telephone.
• Training for staff (management, administrative, and academic) to understand and effectively meet their responsibilities towards students with impairments.
• Facilitation of workshops, focus groups or hui.

What is our background?
Ava Gibson and I both have extensive knowledge of Kia Ôrite and the tertiary sector. We were responsible for the development, publication and launch of Kia Ôrite for ACHIEVE. I was the Project Coordinator and Ava was Chair of the Steering Committee.

Collectively we bring over three decade’s experience in disability advocacy and support. Ava was also previously the Manager of Disability Support Services at Victoria University and I held the equivalent position at Lincoln University. We are both are experienced trainers and facilitators, skilled in supervision, coaching and disability consultancy.
