The Disability Community and Their Rights

There is a set of legal rights that the disability community has, that all staff should be aware of when working with the disability community.

This training covers the rights set out in the Human Rights Act, the Code of Health and Disability Consumers' Rights and the Privacy Act; and the implications for staff.

The information presented is relevant to staff in a range of settings - education, employment, social service agencies, those providing goods and services, etc.

Workshop Topics

The Human Rights Act topics include:

  • What is the Human Rights Act?
  • What is direct and indirect discrimination?
  • The grounds for unlawful discrimination
  • Which people with disability are covered by this Act?
  • Areas of unlawful discrimination.
  • What is Reasonable Accommodation and the exceptions to this?
  • How this Act affects the way services should be provided for the disability community.

The Code of Health and Disability Consumers' Rights includes a set of guidelines for staff working within Health and Disability Services. The implications for the disclosure of disability related information is also discussed, in relation to the Privacy Act.

Throughout this workshop staff are given the opportunity to discuss a range of practical examples.
